Rat Specimen, Pregnant, Double Injected

A rat dissection is an excellent and engaging biology or life science activity! Dissection of this pregnant rat specimen allows both students and educators to investigate the uterus, embryos, placenta, and umbilical attachment of a mammal and vertebrate.

This pregnant rat dissection specimen (comes in a qty of 1) is an adult pregnant female rat, typically 7" or longer in length. It is a double-injected specimen with red latex injected into the arteries and blue latex injected into the veins, allowing you to more easily trace the vascular system. The rat species of this pregnant rat dissection specimen is typically Rattus norvegicus.

Along with learning about the amazing details of mammalian pregnancy and reproduction, an anatomical dissection of this pregnant rat specimen provides insight into mammalian body systems through the discovery and analysis of body parts outside of and within the abdominal cavity. For example, exploring body parts such as the esophagus, stomach, large and small intestines, and rectum of this rat can teach students more about the mammalian digestive system - just as an investigation of its heart, veins, and arteries can teach them about the circulatory system!

Note: Specimens are initially preserved with a formaldehyde/formalin solution, the best animal tissue fixative. The formaldehyde is then displaced first with water and finally with a glycol solution to produce a moist, low-fume specimen which will not decay over time.

Once the original package is opened, use specimen within one month. For best results, observe the following storage procedures:

• Store specimen in heavy-duty, zip-lock bags to minimize drying between dissections.
• Specimen will slowly dry out or become contaminated in zip-lock bags; add a teaspoon of Specimen Holding Fluid to retain moisture.
• Freezing or refrigeration is not necessary and may damage fragile tissues.
